taketwo visited the Clink Prison Museum located down Clink Street in Soho Wharf. We were fortunate to embark on a guided tour round the fascinating museum and learn what life was like in one of England's oldest prisons. The Clink Prison Museum is built upon the original site of the Clink Prison, dating back to 1144. Visitors get to experience a personal educational journey as they enter the different sections of the museum, handling original artefacts, including torture devices as well as the chance to view and hear the incredible stories of the inmates and the notorious Southbank..

The prison was owned by the Bishop of Winchester, which was originally used to control the Southbank of London known as 'The Liberty of The Clink'. This area housed many of London's entertainment establishments, including four theatres, Bull Baiting, Inns and many other darker entertainments. The Clink Prison was only a small part of a huge complex on the Bankside that the Bishop called Winchester House. Parts of the Great Hall are still standing today including the world famous Rose Arch Window preserved by the English Heritage. Visitors to the area included individuals such as William Shakespeare, King Henry VIII, Sir Francis Drake, Geoffrey Chaucer and many more.

The Clink Prison Museum welcomes a large number of educational groups and visitors every year, offering them a unique insight into the social, religious and historical issues that relate to The Clink Prison and London's Bankside. Many of these issues and events relating to The Clink Prison not only represent regional significance but also national and international importance. The museum is a research museum furthering the understanding and heritage of The Clink Prison Museum site as well as the overall subject area of prisons, crime and punishment.

The Clink Prison Museum also offers guided tours for up to 10 people in one group being lead by a qualified tour guide. So, whether you're looking for a fun visit to learn about the truly horrific history behind the torture devices or a visit filled with educational fun and learning, The Clink Prison Museum are able to offer it all and cater to your own specific needs.
