The Roald Dahl Museum, winner of Visit England's Best Small Visitor Attraction 2008, was set up to inspire a love of stories and creative writing in all of its visitors and to house Roald Dahl's distinctive and unique archive. Every child over the age of 5 who visits the museum receives a 'Story Ideas Book', akin to Dahl's, so that they can jot down all their thoughts and ideas as they move around the museum. And adults are not forgotten either, as they are provided with a 'Visitors Guide' to use as they go around. The taketwo book has a Roald Dahl Museum offer where when you buy one ticket for the museum, you get another one free.
The museum is based in the village of Missenden where Roald Dahl lived and wrote for 36 years. Lots of his stories are based in and around the village. There are various different areas in the museum, such as the two 'biographical galleries'. These galleries are interactive and depicts the incredible story of Roald Dahl's life, and how in hindsight, these experiences shaped his stories. There is also the 'story centre' area, which encourages everyone- young and old- to get creative with words and story-making. Interactive exhibits are always very popular, and keep children entertained for hours; the Florence Nightingale Museum also houses similar interactive exhibitions which children will also love.
Additionally, there are free story-telling sessions in the courtyard or in Miss Honey's (fans of Dahl's book Matilda will remember her as Matilda's favourite school teacher) classroom if it rains! Many special events take place in the museum and so it is best to keep up to date with the month by month events calendar on the museums website. Some past workshops that have taken place in the museum are puppet making classes and simple cookery classes and chocolate decorating!
The Roald Dahl Museum is situated in Great Missenden in Buckinghamshire and is served by a good train service from London Marylebone, with 2 trains every hour. It is open all week except Mondays and if you're visiting on a sunny day, you can take part in the Roald Dahl Village and Countryside Trails! The taketwo book has over 80 different two for one London vouchers, including the London Film Museum, Household Cavalry Museum, the Cartoon Museum and the Clink Prison Museum!
