Grease had its Broadway premiere in 1972 and has triumphed throughout the world. In 1979 Grease took over the record as the longest-running show in the history of Broadway and the hit film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John proved to be the highest-grossing movie musical ever.
This hit musical phenomenon was created by two friends Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey who with sheer determination and support from Ken Waissman and his partner Maxine Fox turned this great play into reality and moved their back street production to New York and have since never looked backed.
The London production of Grease started in 1999 and has always played to packed houses as well as being voted "The No.1 Greatest Musical" by '100 Greatest Musicals' on Channel 4 television. The current cast under the production of David Ian consists of Matthew Goodgames playing Danny and Carina Gillespie playing Sandy along with a whole host of truly magnificent actors bringing the show alive. "Prepare for dancing in the aisles and standing ovations" Daily Express.
The director David Gilmore explains, "Grease doesn't have a message ... it gives a flavour of being a teenager in the 50s when rock 'n' roll and putting Grease on your hair were the most important things in life and this is the level that we should take it on." Grease has maintained its everlasting popularity, proving that teenage angst and love's young dream remain timeless and universal themes. Grease is currently being played at the Piccadilly Theatre on Denham Street, London and for every ticket sold £1 is given to charity. Be there or be oblong-shaped!
