Florence Nightingale Museum is dedicated to the woman who became a living legend as the 'Lady with the Lamp'. Florence Nightingale led the nurses looking after thousands of soldiers during the Crimean War and helped save the British army from medical tragedy. But this is just one of her many achievements, and a great way to spend a day out in London is by exploring the museum and all her other successes- for she was also a visionary health reformer, a tireless campaigner and the most influential woman in Victorian Britain, bar Queen Victoria herself.

The museum is set out into three areas; the Gilded Cage (which recalls the story of her fortunate childhood), the Calling (which explains how Nightingale and her team coped with the crisis in the military hospitals and where the legend of the lady and the lamp was born) and Reform and Inspire (which showcases her tireless campaigning for health reform).

The museum contains an astounding collection of Florence Nightingales possessions, from the slate she used as a child to her pet owl Athena. The collection spans her whole life, all the way up to her death in 1910 when she was 90 years of age. Other highlights of the museum include the medicine chest which she took with her to the Crimean and it still contains a mix of medicines. There are also some new and interactive exhibits, such as the 'how clean are your hands' display which shows up all the germs on your skin and the exhibition where you're invited to write a letter to Florence Nightingale about an issue which means a lot to you. If you are looking for educational but fun things to do in London with children, this museum is highly recommended.

The museum takes advantage of advances in technology and has recently unveiled its latest audio guides that were written and researched by 18 young people involved in the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad programme 'Stories of the World: London', and they will be added to their existing guides to provide a fresh perspective to the museums collection. And in a fitting tribute to Nightingale, the audio headsets are made to look like stethoscopes! There are two different audio tours: one for 7-11 year olds and another for adults. The audio tour is included in the admission price.

The Museum is located in the grounds of St Thomas' Hospital and is easily accessible central; it is a short walk away from attractions along the South Bank, such as the Garden Museum.

Tickets are £6 for adults, with children under 16 and full time students getting in for free. If you use the Florence Nightingale Museum voucher in the taketwo book, you are able to get two tickets for the price of one. Many, many more offers can be found in the book, with 2 for 1 London vouchers for other museums, tours and attractions. There are also other great things to do in London with many other museums to see that feature in our taketwo book including the London Film Museum, Household Cavalry Museum, the Cartoon Museum and the Clink Prison Museum!
